Commentary

Romeo might be illiterate, but he definitely isn’t ignorant when it comes to languages.

On another note, Romeo ordered an evacuation of the meeting hall for a good reason. Much like their Hindu ancestors, Roma people have serious taboos about death.  The circumstances that led to Toro’s demise makes him susceptible to becoming a mulo or ghost. Lucky and his brother Emilio don’t refer to their father by name or even family status because of the terror this belief brings.  Strangely enough, Romeo seems absolutely unconcerned and downright fearless about the prospect of being haunted by the old man.

Statement Regarding National Geographic’s American Gypsy

Loki won’t be watching or rendering commentary on the show, beyond this: “These people look like they belong in The Godfather.”

I think the last “educational” show involving “gypsies” was enough for us.  Telling stories about Romani peoples and their relationship with societal issues such as crime and domestic abuse, while trying to not sink into throwaway stereotypes is very tough.  Treating the subjects like the cast of Jersey Shore, is not the way to do it.
