Rromani marriages can be a rather disorienting experience. Courtship is often not a consideration, and brides are often very young when they are ready for marriage.
Lucky is older than the average Rrom groom. Usually, boys marry their mid-teens, just as their brides. Lucky’s situation may be the result of his original intended bride dying before they could be married. Such a death could prove very embarrassing to the bride’s family, as Rroma marriages are often tied to politics and wealth. To make amends for that unfortunate turn of events, Romeo Julietta might have offered him a younger daughter for marriage. How much younger? Keep on reading and you’ll soon find out.
This interesting article, though not applicable to all Rroma traditions provides another tantalizing glimpse of marriage within the greater culture.
